Boston Marathon Facts

The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon hosted by several cities in greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts, United States.

Every Marathon Runner wants to qualify and run the Boston Marathon. Here are some facts you might find interesting with Boston.

  1. It is the oldest (back to 1897) and has the fastest median time of 3:44 in the US.
  2. Boston Marathoners pick up their bibs and chips in the largest running expo in the world. 200 exhibitors. Wow.
  3. The highest point on the route is not Heartbreak Hill but is the starting line at 463 feet above sea level.
  4. One of the only marathons run on a weekday. Weird right. Patriots day which is actually only observed in Massachusetts and Maine.
  5. If you like spectators then you got over 500,000 lined up to watch you and all your closest running friends.
  6. You have to qualify (or by charity) to run Boston and most people qualify in a fast, flat course but did you know that once you get into the Boston Marathon you are more likely to qualify again as a majority of the runners qualify by actually running the course.
  7. There are over 8,000 volunteers to help make sure the event is successful
  8. Runners must be 18 years old but there is no upper age limit. Did you know that Maddona Buder finished in 5:38 at the age of 81 – Holy Crap there is hope for all of us.
  9. Where are the loudest cheers – WELLESLEY COLLEGE sometimes it is callled the Scream Tunnel. You might get to kiss one of the girls from the all girls college with all those kiss me signs.
  10. It takes over 30 hours to create the starting line which is designed by a local Hopkinton resident.
